Concrete Driveway & Patio Installation in Dearborn, MI

Narrow side drives and deep backyards, poured right on Dearborn clay.

A lot of Dearborn homes date from the 1920s through the 1950s, set close together with a narrow side driveway running back to a garage. Behind many of them there is a good stretch of yard that is perfect for a patio. The catch is the ground. Dearborn sits on lake-plain clay that holds water, freezes, lifts the slab and lets it drop back crooked in spring. That is why so many old side drives tip toward the garage and crack at the apron.

New concrete, planned around your Dearborn lot

We build both slabs from the bottom up. The soft clay comes out, compacted 21AA goes back in, and each slab gets a slope that moves water toward the street or the yard and away from your foundation. On a tight Dearborn lot, we also plan how the crew, the forms and the concrete truck reach the backyard before the job starts. The City of Dearborn sets the permit rules, and we'll tell you what your project needs.

The ground under Dearborn

Lake-plain clay

Flat, slow-draining clay left behind by the glacial lakes that once covered most of Wayne County.

This clay holds water and drains slowly, and in spring the water table sits close to the surface. When that water freezes, it lifts the slab above it; when it thaws, the softened clay lets the slab settle back unevenly. That cycle is why so many driveways here tip toward the garage, crack at the apron and hold puddles after a storm.

How we build in Dearborn

Dig out the soft clay, replace it with compacted 21AA aggregate base, and set the slope so water runs off the slab and away from the house.

What fails here first

On tight lots we often use a concrete pump or move the mix in smaller loads, depending on access. We look at the path to the backyard during the estimate. The plan gets written into your quote so there are no surprises on pour day.
