We pour driveways and patios in 30 communities within about 25 miles of Westland, from Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti in the west to Southfield, Birmingham and Allen Park in the east. Most of the work lands in Wayne County, close to our shop in Romulus, with steady jobs in Oakland County and Washtenaw County as well. The ground changes more than people expect over that distance. Westland, Livonia, Dearborn and much of the east side sit on flat lake-plain clay that holds water and heaves in frost. Novi, Farmington Hills, Northville and the Bloomfields roll over glacial till with real slopes to manage. Canton, Plymouth, Belleville and Ypsilanti have sandy outwash that drains fast and shifts when it's loose. We dig, base and grade each one to suit what's under it.
Lake-plain clay
12 communitiesFlat, slow-draining clay left behind by the glacial lakes that once covered most of Wayne County. This clay holds water and drains slowly, and in spring the water table sits close to the surface.
Dig out the soft clay, replace it with compacted 21AA aggregate base, and set the slope so water runs off the slab and away from the house.
Rolling glacial till
13 communitiesThe hills of southern Oakland County, a mix of dense clay with pockets of sand and stone left by retreating glaciers. Till is unpredictable from one end of a driveway to the other.
Proof-roll the subgrade to find soft spots, replace them, build a thicker compacted base, and plan the grade so runoff is carried around the slab.
Sandy outwash
5 communitiesSand and gravel laid down by glacial meltwater along the Rouge and Huron rivers, from Plymouth and Canton down to Belleville and Ypsilanti. Sandy ground drains far better than clay, so frost heave is less of a problem.
Compaction done in lifts, a full-depth aggregate base, and a thicker section anywhere a truck, trailer or RV will park.
