Concrete Driveway & Patio Installation in Romulus, MI

Our shop is in Romulus, so your driveway and patio are close to home for us.

SC Concrete Services works out of a shop on Heyer Street in Romulus, so jobs here are about as close to home as they get. Romulus has a real mix of houses, from older homes on flat lake-plain clay to newer subdivisions, and the driveway and patio plan changes with each one. On an older lot we may be tearing out a tipped original slab. In a newer subdivision we might be adding the patio the builder skipped.

New concrete, planned around your Romulus lot

Either way, the ground is clay that holds water, so both slabs get the soft clay dug out and replaced with compacted 21AA, with the slope set away from the house. We pour an air-entrained mix with reinforcement and cut control joints. The City of Romulus sets the permit requirements for driveways, approaches and patios, and we check them for your address. Most of our Romulus work is homes, with some commercial lots around the airport.

The ground under Romulus

Lake-plain clay

Flat, slow-draining clay left behind by the glacial lakes that once covered most of Wayne County.

This clay holds water and drains slowly, and in spring the water table sits close to the surface. When that water freezes, it lifts the slab above it; when it thaws, the softened clay lets the slab settle back unevenly. That cycle is why so many driveways here tip toward the garage, crack at the apron and hold puddles after a storm.

How we build in Romulus

Dig out the soft clay, replace it with compacted 21AA aggregate base, and set the slope so water runs off the slab and away from the house.

What fails here first
