Six things that decide what your project costs
Size and shape
The crew, the truck and the setup cost about the same for a small pad as for a big driveway, so small jobs cost more per square foot. Curves, steps and tight corners add forming time.
Tearing out the old slab
Breaking out, loading and hauling away old concrete or asphalt is its own line on the estimate, and thick or reinforced slabs take longer.
The ground under it
Lake-plain clay usually means digging out soft clay and bringing in compacted 21AA. Rolling till needs its soft spots found and replaced; sandy outwash needs compaction in lifts.
Thickness and reinforcement
Six inches for trucks, trailers and RVs costs more than four under a patio, and the approach at the street is often six by the road authority’s rule.
The finish
Broom finish is the baseline. Integral color, exposed aggregate and stamped patterns add material and labor, and they need sealing to keep their look.
Access, timing and permits
A truck that can reach the forms costs less than pumping or wheeling concrete to the back yard. Approach and flatwork permits and late-season cold-weather precautions add to it.
