Concrete Patio Installation in Ann Arbor, MI

Room to sit outside, cut into Ann Arbor's hills and old lots.

Ann Arbor backyards come in every shape. Close to downtown and the University of Michigan, older houses sit on narrow lots with a small yard and a back door that opens straight onto grass. Toward the edges of town, newer subdivisions have bigger yards and more room. Along the Huron River, the ground rises and falls, and a flat patio has to be cut into a slope.

Patio Installation in Ann Arbor

A Ann Arbor patio, built from the ground up

That ground is glacial till, and it changes within a few feet. One corner of your future patio might be firm clay, the other a pocket of sand. We proof-roll the subgrade after digging, replace whatever gives, and build a compacted 21AA base in lifts so the whole slab rests on the same kind of support. Then the grade gets set so water leaves the patio and heads away from your foundation.

Finish is a personal choice in Ann Arbor. Some people want a clean broom slab that disappears into the garden. Others want a stamped stone pattern, a colored border or an exposed aggregate surface. We'll pour steps down from the door, a fire-pit pad or a hot-tub pad as part of the same job, and we'll size the patio to the furniture you actually own.

Rolling glacial till under Ann Arbor

The hills of southern Oakland County, a mix of dense clay with pockets of sand and stone left by retreating glaciers.

Proof-roll the subgrade to find soft spots, replace them, build a thicker compacted base, and plan the grade so runoff is carried around the slab.

Questions and answers

Patio Installation in Ann Arbor: what people ask us

Yes. We cut into the high side and build up the low side with compacted base, then pour a level slab with just enough fall to shed water. On steeper yards a step or a short retaining edge may be part of the plan. We'll show you the options when we measure.
