Concrete Patio Installation in Farmington, MI

Pouring a patio where the old trees get a say.

Farmington's older neighborhoods have the kind of mature trees people move here for. They shade the backyard, which makes it a pleasant place to sit, and their roots are often the reason the old patio lifted and cracked. Planning a new concrete patio in Farmington means looking at where those roots run before choosing the shape of the slab.

Patio Installation in Farmington

A Farmington patio, built from the ground up

The ground is rolling glacial till, which changes from clay to sand within a few feet. After we dig, we proof-roll the subgrade, replace soft spots and build a compacted 21AA base in lifts. We keep the patio a reasonable distance from big trunks and, where the layout allows, curve the edge around them. Then the slope is set so water runs off the patio and away from the house.

Many homes near downtown Farmington have a back door that sits above the yard, so a landing and a couple of steps often come with the patio. Beyond that, the choices are yours: broom, stamped or exposed aggregate, a colored border, a pad for a fire pit or a hot tub. We'll size it all around the furniture you plan to use.

Rolling glacial till under Farmington

The hills of southern Oakland County, a mix of dense clay with pockets of sand and stone left by retreating glaciers.

Proof-roll the subgrade to find soft spots, replace them, build a thicker compacted base, and plan the grade so runoff is carried around the slab.

Patio Installation in Farmington: what people ask us

We look at where the big roots run and keep the new slab a sensible distance from the trunk. A curved edge around the tree often works better than a straight one. A compacted aggregate base and reinforcement also help the slab handle small root movement.
